Kisspeptin neurons in the hypothalamus project onto GnRH neurons, and KISS1R activation is the trigger that sets the entire hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in motion: GnRH release, then LH and FSH from the pituitary, then downstream gonadal signaling. Loss-of-function KISS1R mutations block pubertal development — the discovery that established the pathway.
What Laboratories Study
Research designs use kisspeptin to probe GnRH neuron excitability, to model LH pulse generation, and to dissect feedback loops within the axis. It pairs naturally with downstream compounds: HCG models LH receptor activation at the gonadal level, letting studies interrogate the axis at two points.
